Yes, I know, it’s February. Goals were so last month, right? Well you can always count on me to remind you that bloggers aren’t perfect, even if we do obsess over curating our Instagram feeds.

If there’s anything I learned from my unintentional 5 month blogging hiatus, it’s that I need to set up a solid self-care foundation before ANYTHING else. Before trying to juggle my day job with freelance writing, blogging, dating, crafting, travel, and all the rest. Self. Care. First.

DIY Rattan Pumpkin, or, Millennials Don’t Carve

10.04.18

It’s a pumpkin swap! I teamed up with three other blogging gals to show our takes on a modern trend pumpkin. (GUESS WHICH TREND I PICKED). Keep reading to see what we came up with!

Make this DIY rattan pumpkin to be the most stylish porch on the block!

How many things can you cover with rattan?

All of them. The answer is all of them.

A funny side effect of being a blogger is that it makes you way more tuned in to trends. (I blame Pinterest). Hexagons, pineapples, color-blocking, terrazzo—I’ve dabbled in all of these fads in the years since I started the blog. Hey, I have to make myself look cool somehow.

But this rattan/cane trend. This is something special. Cane webbing is just so simple. And classic. And VERSATILE.

The natural outcome of the Awesomeness that is Cane is that I have to put it on all of the things. Sorry, no choice in the matter.

All this to say, I made a DIY rattan pumpkin and you can too!

DIY Rattan Pumpkin

It’s stylish. It’s easy. And it follows the most important rule Pinterest has taught us about pumpkin decorating: never, EVER carve.

Speaking of not carving, when one of my blog friends suggested that we each take on a current design trend as a pumpkin decorating technique, I was obviously stoked and said yes right away. So, I’m VERY happy to be able to share the super stylish ideas from our ever on-point ringleader, Cat from Ctrl + Curate; real-life crafting comrade, Faith of Design Fixation; and newish-to-me, but very admired, Christina at Spatial Dwelling.

Keep reading to find out how to make your own DIY rattan pumpkin, and catch my friends’ modern trend pumpkins at the end of the post!

Guest Post: DIY 80s Style Patterned Bookmarks

DIY 80s Style Patterned Bookmarks by Enthralling Gumption for Idle Hands Awake

I’m so happy to share this guest DIY with you today, by the talented Marwa of the blog Enthralling Gumption. Marwa is one of the many wonderful women I’ve met online through this wild and weird thing called blogging. She has a great eye for color and design, and creates fun and easy home decor projects, accessories, and beautiful printables. Today Marwa has been kind enough to share her talents with you guys while I continue to recover from my chaotic apartment move. Enjoy!

80’s Memphis style pattern is back on trend for quite some time now.  Terrazzo being a part of the movement, on which both Marlene and I have a couple of projects for you to check out!

This time around, I wanted to give a mix of squiggle, wacky geometry and even 3D version of them (giving it a modern twist) a try. The great thing about it is that this design is forgiving and easy to make. You may even end up drawing something out your head similar to them.

Since we are on a back-to-school rush, I decided to create two DIY 80’s style patterned bookmarks for my daily planner with the help of Deco Art’s patent leather paint. Now without further ado, let’s jump into the real deal.

Moody Blue Bedroom Makeover

When life throws you a curve ball…you jump out of the way because you’re terrible at catching things and have an uncontrollable flinch reaction that looks like a 1950s housewife pulling up her skirts to avoid a mouse in the kitchen.

Ok, I’m not actually running away from this curve ball, so much as into it. Unless you count MOVING OUT OF MY NEWLY MADE-OVER BLUE BEDROOM as running away.

That’s right, I’m moving. Again.

::insert all the regretful sobs here::
